In [[Xen]], the "host" operating system is, in fact, just another virtual machine. It is special in that it has special access to the underlying hardware and a direct view at Xen's networking. As such, it is referred to with the special descriptive name <span class="code">dom0</span>. By contrast, all other virtual machines running on the Xen kernel are collectively referred to as <span class="code">domU</span>s.
