"NIC" is an acronym for Network Interface Card and refer to any device that provides access to a network. Often these are not actually expansion cards, but devices integrated into a mainboard. The most common interface is an RJ-45 connector, though NICs that connect to fiber-optic networks and other older interfaces exist.
