The CentOS project was a project to build a binary equivalent replacement for the commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution. The only changes the CentOS distribution is in changing branding and images.
CentOS was ended as a project after being taken over by Red Hat. Now both AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux aim to replace CentOS.
