 Alteeve Wiki :: Enterprise Linux

Enterprise Linux, or simply EL, describes any Linux distribution based on Red Hat's "Enterprise Linux", itself referred to as RHEL. It is common to see the acronym ELx where x is a version number., ie: EL4, EL5 and EL6. Perhaps the most popular, free EL distribution is CentOS.

Red Hat, under the terms of the GPL and similar licenses, makes available all of the source code for it's commercial "Enterprise Linux" distributions. This forms the foundation for freely available, community driven distributions like CentOS who aim to provide binary-compatible versions available. Of course, these "down stream providers" must remove Red Hat's trademarked branding when doing so.
