For fencing to work, you need to enable IPMI access over the network. By default, this is disabled.

Unable To Connect To IPMI Remotely

When an attempt is made to check the chassis power state, the following errors is returned;

Using ipmitool;

ipmitool -H -U root -P Initial1 -I lanplus chassis power status
Error: Unable to establish IPMI v2 / RMCP+ session

Using fence_ipmilan;

fence_ipmilan --lanplus --ip --username root --password Initial1 --action status
2020-10-13 05:19:36,638 ERROR: Connection timed out

Enable IPMI Over LAN

Log into the IPMI web interface.

Log into Dell iDRAC WebUI.

Click on 'iDRAC Settings'

iDRAC Settings menu.

Click the 'Connectivity' tab, then click to expand 'Network' then 'IPMI Settings'.

Connectivity > Network > IPMI Settings.

Change 'Enable IPMI over LAN' to 'Enabled'.

IPMI over LAN enabled.

You should now be able to connect to iDRAC remotely.

ipmitool -H -U root -P Initial1 -I lanplus chassis power status
Chassis Power is off
fence_ipmilan --lanplus --ip --username root --password Initial1 --action status
Status: OFF
