 AN!Wiki :: How To :: DNS

DNS is an acronym for Domain Name Server, which is a tool that translates network addresses into IPv4 or IPv6 addresses. It is very similar to a traditional phone book, in that you use the known name, like alteeve.ca, and a DNS server will return the IPv4 address 192.139.81.117.

This system was designed to make it easy to take an easy to remember name and translate it into the address needed to locate a server on a network. There are many popular DNS servers out there, with ISC BIND being particularly popular.
