Alteeve Wiki :: Multicast IGMP Snooping

In theory, a managed switch with IGMP Snooping enabled will keep track of what devices have joined multicast groups and only forward multicast packets to those ports. In practice, this doesn't always work. In clustering, if a node fails to receive a multicast packet, it will assume that the other node did not send one. This is the mechanism used for determining when a node has died and thus needs to be fenced. For this reason, if you enable IGMP Snooping, you must ensure that it is working properly and indeed forwarding multicast messages between nodes.

  • Wikipedia has a more thorough explanation of IGMP Snooping.
