Update: Everything has been resolved. There were hiccups, but I am once again *looooving* my T400s. :D

Aug. 2010

I EAT HUMBLE PIE. So ya, there was a physical switch to turn off the radios. I've had this this for a year and two days and I never saw it.

To Lenovo's credit, the guy was very nice about it. :P

I'd not expected to update this page, but now the wlan/bluetooth has died. (see above, it didn't)

  • Prior ref. #: 00005030
  • Order #:
    • laptop: 4240128086
    • dock: 4218011237
  • Serial #: R8ATEY9
  • New Case #: 41JP8MH (for WLAN and Bluetooth) - was my problem, hardware was fine.

Detail

Midday on Aug. 3, 2010, the bluetooth and wireless just dropped out. I tried rebooting, the reseating the card with no luck. I ran the diagnostics and the WLAN boot ISO (DR-DOS) failed. There didn't seem to be a bluetooth test, but I did get too long to search as the laptop began heating up a lot in the top-left area. Withing five minutes, the heat coming out of the vent was almost painfully hot and I shut down the system.

WLAN

This is a note for myself:

Antennae colours:
2 = Black
3 = White
1 = Gray

Other

After removing the WLAN/Bluetooth card and re-running the tests, the laptop didn't heat up as much.

CPU

Tests run after removing the WLAN/Bluetooth PCIe card.

  • CPU Tests Passed
  • System board Tests Passed
  • Video Tests Passed

Feb. 2010

Here is how it all played out.

Hi Lenovo Depot folks,

Here are pics of the problems. Please see the image comments. So far, I've not had much luck with this unit. =/

Cracked Palm Rest

The palm-rest crack... the palm of my hand sits right above there, so I wonder if the weight of my hand cracked it? It shouldn't, but maybe it was a material defect?

Dark Pixels

I thought this was dust or dirt, but I tried cleaning it with a lint-free cloth for glasses and it didn't help. It's an odd pattern for dark pixels, but I can't see anything on the surface so I guess it's the pixels? To see for yourself, load an all-white image and look in the bottom-left corner.

Stuck Dock Retainer

I uploaded this to Youtube to show how the button that is supposed to release the retention clip after ejecting the laptop sticks. Sorry for the poor quality of the video.
